Quantitative Optimization of Highly Efficient Dedicated CORDIC Macros for SoCs in Deep-Submicron CMOS Technologies

The CORDIC algorithm is frequently used in many applications and dedicated CORDIC macros are attractive components for SoCs e.g., as hardware accelerators to Application-Specific Instruction-set Processors. Therefore, there is a wide variety of CORDIC specifications. In order to achieve high area and energy efficiency for a given specification, a systematic exploration of the design space is required. Due to the features of today’s deep-submicron CMOS technologies, there are strong interactions between the design levels which makes a quantitative optimization challenging. In this contribution, an attractive approach based on algebraic cost models is described, which allows for exploring the design space with adequate accuracy and in reasonable time. The benefits from this approach are demonstrated by an evaluation for different exemplary CORDIC specifications.

Theories on the On-board Lithium-Ion Battery Electric Power Generator for Infinite Cruising Range Electric Vehicles

There has been considerable interest recently in electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries. To achieve electric vehicles with an infinite cruising range, a new method of charging the lithium-ion battery has been developed, which is termed “electrostatic-induction potential-superposed electrolytic charge (ESI-PSE)”. In ESI-PSE, the charge can be completed with power that 12% of power required for typical direct voltage application. The power generation unit consists of a pair of the same battery modules, in which the performance can be explained through consecutive cycles of alternate charge and discharge between two batteries; when the charge of one battery with the ESI-PSE mode is terminated, it becomes responsible for both the power to recharge the other battery and the power supplied to a motor. This power generator works with zero energy input, zero matter input and zero emission without violating the laws of thermodynamics. Because of simplicity, effectiveness, cleanliness and self-exiting, this specific propulsion system will offer potential route for automobile in the future.

Analysis of Combined Motor Current Signature and Vibration-Monitoring Techniques in the Study of Broken Bars in Three-Phase High-Performance Induction Motors

Anomalies in operation of the motor modify harmonic content of motor supply current. Motor electrical current signature analysis (MCSA) is sensing an electrical signal containing current components. In this work, by introducing progressive failures to a healthy motor, we investigated the efficacy of combining motor current signature analysis with vibration-monitoring techniques for the detection of broken bars in the squirrel-cage rotors of three-phase high-efficiency induction motors, which are the new standard in Brazilian industry. Our results demonstrate that the combined approach improves reliability in the diagnosis of broken bars.
