The increasing concern for the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists has led to the development of various detection and protection systems. This review explores an enhanced detection system for VRUs that leverages infrastructure-sensorenabled devices. The system integrates advanced sensor technologies, communication networks, and data analytics to provide real-time detection and warning mechanisms. This article covers the fundamental principles of VRU detection, the types of infrastructure sensors used, the architecture of the detection system, and the benefits and challenges associated with its implementation.
